Additionally, it provides a striking example of the consequences of a lack of holism in modern science. In this case, scientists in one specialism - astrophysics - apparently unaware of the elementary properties of electric fields.

Researchers have found that the space probe Pioneer 10, which took the first close-up pictures of Jupiter is being pulled back to the sun by an unknown force. The effect shows no sign of getting weaker as the spacecraft travels deeper into space. Scientists are considering the possibility that the probe has revealed a new force of nature. If the effect is real, it will have a big impact on cosmology.

Pioneer 10 was launched by NASA on March 2 1972, and passed Pluto, most distant planet in our solar system in June 1983. Scientists are continuing to monitor signals from Pioneer 10, which is more than seven billion miles from Earth. No current theories explain why the force stays constant. All the most plausible forces, from gravity to the effect of solar radiation, decrease rapidly with distance. Data from other probes suggests the force is of the same strength as that found for Pioneer 10.
The mystery only arises because no astrophysicist would think to ask the question of whether there is a steady interplanetary electric field. The difference is that the electrical force is about 10³⁹ times stronger than gravity.

An electric field in interplanetary space will have a measurable effect on a charged spacecraft. In this case, the anode is in the Sun's corona. Where electrons are accelerated toward the Sun, causing the apparent million-degree surface temperatures, and the protons are accelerated away from the Sun to form the solar wind. Of course, the solar system has no physical cathode in space. Instead, the plasma foms a bubble, known as a virtual cathode. Effectively it is the heliopause.

A spacecraft becomes charged by accepting electrons from the surrounding space plasma. Near Earth a spacecraft may attain a potential of several tens of thousands of volts. Being negatively charged, it will experience an infinitesimal pull toward the positively charged Sun.

The effect will have a fundamental impact on cosmology because Pioneer 10 has confirmed the electrical model of Stars!

Pioneer 10 is now 7.4 billion miles from Earth, maybe 90% of the way to the heliopause. The electrical model of the solar system predicts that at the heliopause Pioneer 10 will decelerate more strongly.

The implications are profound, if we do not understand our closest star, all speculation about more distant stars and their histories are misguided. For example, the electrical force between the spiral arms of a galaxy must maintain the integrity of the system.
Missing mass or dark matter making up most of the galactic mass is the explanation which astrophysicists have to adopt in order to explain why centrifugal force does not blow the spiral apart.
Cosmology must change spectacularly once the electrical nature of the universe is recognized.
